The writings gathered in this volume will not be read quickly or superficially. Paragraphs will continually ask to be reread. Thomas Merton’s perspicacious meditations, offered with such poetic strength, are to his reader like veins whose rich ore leads the miner deep. The effort is real and so too is the reward. Merton (1915-1968) was a contemplative monk, a Trappist, and although most of his readers may think themselves of another world, so to speak, it is the world of which Merton writes which is Real, and the clabbering, self-directed world of our common experience that is illusory.
A few thoughts, ones that are obviously directed more narrowly toward other Catholic monks, may generally be less helpful to most readers (I think of basically one chapter). I could offer other minor detraction but it would probably only amount to vanity on my part. It will be more valuable to meditate on these words of Merton:
"Those who love their own noise are impatient of everything else. They constantly defile the silence of the forests and the mountains and the sea. They bore through silent nature in every direction with their machines, for fear that the calm world might accuse them of their own emptiness. The urgency of their swift movement seems to ignore the tranquillity of nature by pretending to have a purpose. The loud plane seems for a moment to deny the reality of the clouds and of the sky, by its direction, its noise, and its pretended strength. The silence of the sky remains when the plane has gone. The tranquility of the clouds will remain when the plane has fallen apart. It is the silence of the world that is real. Our noise, our business, our purposes, and all our fatuous statements about our purposes, our business, and our noise: these are the illusion.

Bonded Leather: 256 pagesPublisher: Charisma House; Lea edition (September 14, 2010)Language: EnglishISBN-10: 1616382155ISBN-13: 978-1616382155 Product Dimensions: 5 x 0.7 x 7 inches Shipping Weight: 8.8 ounces (View shipping rates and policies) Best Sellers Rank: #7,752 in Books (See Top 100 in Books) #20 in Books > Christian Books & Bibles > Christian Living > Spiritual Warfare #169 in Books > Christian Books & Bibles > Christian Living > Spiritual Growth #1670 in Books > Religion & Spirituality

I first noticed this book while shopping in my local grocery store one evening. I was extremely surprised to see a hardcore Christian deliverance book this kind of setting. Needless to say it piqued my interest, so I picked it up and looked through it. I was astonished at the amount of stuff packed into this little book. I did not buy it that night, but went home to research it on . What I found was that it is actually 2 previously released titles re-released into one compact book.
I did go back and buy it the next day. I am extremely happy with it. The first part of the book, or rather, the first book, contains prayers to release the power and authority and blessing of God upon your life through praying the scriptures. He is most definately NOT a scripture twister, trying to whip up formulas to manipulate God. Rather, he is teaching believers to pray, think, and walk in a higher place of victory through the awesome power of God made available to us through Jesus Christ. This is the best way I know how to put it, because it is definately unlike any other book I have ever run across.
Also contained in the first part are prayers of renunciation of evil in many diverse forms, and prayers for self deliverance. He also has various pages which are informative to read, about satan’s tactics and different kinds of bondages, and how to walk in victory and deliverance.
The second book explains first, and then leads you through, deliverance of various kinds of curses that may be affecting your life without you even realizing they are there.
I can’t recommend this book enough. Very few Christians are walking in total freedom. This book will help you identify and get free of any areas where you may be walking in bondage. Then use it to set others free!

I seen this book in a local book store not long ago and after I looked through it I could not believe the great power of god that was in this book. At first glance after seeing how this book was put together I had to have it. This book is a must buy for anyone who wants to amplify there spiritual walk with God because it details prayers that help deliver anyone from spiritual bondage as well as how to break curses that the devil and his domain has set against you. I would give this book a 10 out or 10 and would advise anyone who want’s to take hold of there life with the great power of God to buy this book.

THIS BOOK ACTUALLY HELPED ME RID A HOUSE OF A SPIRIT THAT WAS MAKING PEOPLE FEEL VERY UNCOMFORTABLE. i HIGHLY RECOMMED THIS BOOK TO ANYONE LOOKING FOR SPIRITAUL HEALING OR FOR WARFARE AGAINST SPIRITS.

We bought this book after buying Barron’s How to Prepare for the Coop/HSPT/TACHS to get a few more practice exams for my son, who just took the HSPT this past weekend. Though we preferred Barron’s review sections, it was helpful to re-enforce the concepts with the Kaplan chapters.

What was most frustrating about the Kaplan book was that there simply were too many mistakes in the sample test answers. We took a final sample practice a couple of days before the HSPT. Because we had used up all the sample HSPT exams, we used portions of a sample TACHS exam instead. For the Language Arts section, the answers led us to believe that my son missed 8 out of 40 questions. When we reviewed the answers, it became apparent that only 3 questions were actually wrong. This caused much unnecessary stress.

According to my son, the actual test had much harder verbal skills questions and easier language arts questions. Of course, we do not know how well he did yet, so this information may not be reliable.

I bought this book to review for an upcoming HS entrance exam. Since it covers several types of exams, there are chapters that aren’t applicable to my situation. So even though the book is quite thick and intimidating looking, it really is manageable once you get started. Lots of practice tests too. I bought another book that is focused on theories and strategy, so I needed a book with practice tests to monitor my progress.

Amazing!!! Bought this book 3 weeks prior to my exam for a a Catholic boys’ high school. After doing a couple of the exercises and practice tests. I was able to not only get into my high school but earned a full ride and made it into all honors classes. Absolutely fabulous cannot recommend enough!

The Sermon on the Mount Gift Edition: The Key to Success in Life – Deckle Edge, November 6, 2012

The Sermon on the Mount Gift Edition: The Key to Success in Life Hardcover – Deckle Edge, November 6, 2012
Author: Visit ‘s Emmet Fox Page ID: 0062221566

.com Review

The Sermon on the Mount–now passing its 65th birthday–remains a vital and provocative introduction to the ideas at the heart of Christian Science. At heart it means to be entirely practical, as the “Science” of the name would indicate. Denying any interest in theology (there is no theology in the Bible, Fox argues), the author instead suggests that what Jesus was after was results: “Jesus explains to us what the nature of God is, and what our own nature is; tells us the meaning of life and of death; shows us why we make mistakes; why we yield to temptation; why we become sick, and impoverished, and old; and, most important of all, he tells us how all these evils may be overcome, and how we may bring health, happiness, and true prosperity into our lives.”

And the Spiritual Key? Fox puts it quite simply: “The Truth turns out to be nothing less than the amazing but undeniable fact that the whole outer world–whether it be the physical body, the common things of life, the winds and the rain, the clouds, the earth itself–is amenable to man’s thought, and that he has dominion over it when he knows it.” –Doug Thorpe –This text refers to the Paperback edition.

Review

“A practical handbook of spiritual development . . . [Fox] gives his readers a profound outlook upon life and an absolutely fresh scale of values.” (New York Times Book Review)

Emmet Fox has been a major spiritual inspiration in my life and a significant intellectual force behind all my work. (Steve Chandler, author of The Story of You)

“Emmet Fox was one of the world’s greatest metaphysical teachers. His works have contributed profoundly to the spiritual understanding of millions of people, including myself.” (Marianne Williamson, author of A Return to Love)

Fox encourages us to use our minds with our religion. This is a great work. In it’s time it must have been quite controversial. Today Conversations with God and An Encounter With A Prophet expand on what Fox had to say in the 1930’s. All three books are a must read for independant thinkers.

I am a recovering alcoholic. A few months back I went on an 8 day cruise to Central America. When the ship left the dock I was seized by a panic, I would be stuck on this ship, away from my support group in no less than a floating bar. I was up most of the first night. The next day I found this book (a friend had loaned it to me) and in desperation I started reading. By the end of the day my panic had passed and I felt closer to God than I had in a long time. I thought I had given up on Jesus many many years ago and that was the attitude I had when I boarded the ship. After reading this book I stepped on to the shore in Miami a Christian again, something I thought was quite impossible. This is a very powerful book. Mr. Fox sweeps away centuries of religious dogma and brings us back to the spiritual principals Jesus actually taught. I have read it several times since my trip. It has done nothing less than revolutionize my whole outlook on life and recovery. The right book at exactly the right time in my life. I pray it will do the same for you.

Emmet Fox was a philosopher and lecturer in the ’30s; this book was read and used by the founders of AA before the Big Book was written. Although Fox writes of what I think of as "absolutes" (you can overcome death, for example) kind of in the style of the Oxford Groups (also popular at that time), I find his approach to the Jesus Christ message full of hope and clear cut examples of how to apply this to your daily life. I cannot recite the Lord’s Prayer without thinking of Fox’s interpretation. I love this book!!
