Title: The Anarchy Pdf The Relentless Rise of the East India Company

Bloomsbury presents The Anarchy by William Dalrymple, read by Sid Sagar.

The Top Five Sunday Times Best Seller

Longlisted for The Baillie Gifford Prize for Non-Fiction 2019

In August 1765 the East India Company defeated the young Mughal emperor and forced him to establish in his richest provinces a new administration run by English merchants who collected taxes through means of a ruthless private army - what we would now call an act of involuntary privatisation.

The East India Company's founding charter authorised it to 'wage war' and it had always used violence to gain its ends. But the creation of this new government marked the moment that the East India Company ceased to be a conventional international trading corporation dealing in silks and spices and became something much more unusual: an aggressive colonial power in the guise of a multinational business. In less than four decades it had trained up a security force of around 200,000 men - twice the size of the British army - and had subdued an entire subcontinent, conquering first Bengal and finally, in 1803, the Mughal capital of Delhi itself. The Company's reach stretched until almost all of India south of the Himalayas was effectively ruled from a boardroom in London.

The Anarchy tells the remarkable story of how one of the world's most magnificent empires disintegrated and came to be replaced by a dangerously unregulated private company, based thousands of miles overseas in one small office, five windows wide, and answerable only to its distant shareholders. In his most ambitious and riveting audiobook to date, William Dalrymple tells the story of the East India Company as it has never been told before, unfolding a timely cautionary tale of the first global corporate power.

Outstanding and eye opening Excellenttimely delivery everything was fineRaj Inc. I am honestly a bit disappointed in this book from William Dalrymple because he is a favorite author of mine, and I felt like the history of the East India Company was the perfect subject for him to tackle. Dalrymple writes vivid, moving and colorful histories of the Indian subcontinent and I thought his idea here that the East India Company represents the prototype of an unregulated corporation run amok was one loaded with implications for the present. The epilogue fleshes this idea out quite nicely, and I thought the book would be a hybrid of sorts, with history, political analysis and cultural insights that Dalrymple does quite well. But for the most part the book is a quite detailed military history of the region and times. It just was not as good as I expected from this author. I do recommend Dalrymple to anyone with an interest in the region and time, but I don't feel this was his best.

Title: Smart but Scattered Pdf The Revolutionary "Executive Skills" Approach to Helping Kids Reach Their Potential
Author: Peg Dawson
Published Date: 2009-01-01

"The best parent resource on executive skills that I have seen. As a parent of three children, one of whom has learning disabilities, and as a special education associate who works in the classroom, I highly recommend this book. It shows there is hope for children who are struggling, and offers practical, detailed advice."--L. Libbey, parent, Hampton, NH"Filled with real-world examples and solutions, this easy-to-read book is the first comprehensive guide to the management of children's executive skills. It gets to the heart of the matter, offering both parents and teachers accessible and highly efficient means to cope with a gamut of obstacles faced by children of all ages and abilities."--Kristina Mecelicaite, MEd, special education coordinator, North Central Charter Essential School, Fitchburg, MA "Do you feel stymied by your child's failure to live up to his or her potential? Have you run out of ideas about how to handle the situation? Look no further--this fascinating and readable book is packed full of useful ideas that will help you understand what the problem is and how you can help. It presents practical and proven techniques based on rigorous scientific research."--Peter Farrell, PhD, University of Manchester, UK; past president, International School Psychology Association"Drs. Dawson and Guare translate cutting-edge research into meaningful, practical, well-organized, and easy-to-implement strategies that parents can use to enhance a child's natural executive abilities. This brilliant book is by far the best on the topic that I have read to date."--Russell A. Barkley, PhD, ABPP, author of Taking Charge of ADHD

There’s nothing more frustrating than watching your bright, talented son or daughter struggle with everyday tasks like finishing homework, putting away toys, or following instructions at school. Your “smart but scattered” child might also have trouble coping with disappointment or managing anger. Drs. Peg Dawson and Richard Guare have great news: there’s a lot you can do to help.

The latest research in child development shows that many kids who have the brain and heart to succeed lack or lag behind in crucial “executive skills”--the fundamental habits of mind required for getting organized, staying focused, and controlling impulses and emotions. Learn easy-to-follow steps to identify your child’s strengths and weaknesses, use activities and techniques proven to boost specific skills, and problem-solve daily routines. Small changes can add up to big improvements--this empowering book shows how.

Maybe I'm Scattered too? I find this difficult to read. Seems to be longer and wordier than necessary. Perhaps my brain has become twitter adapted? Perhaps my kids get their executive function issues from me? I think the could accomplish the same objective in fewer, easier to read pages. (book is highly regarded and I'm sure the material is great - I just have a hard time reading it because of the writing style)Updates! Plenty of strategies and modeling scenarios!☺ Some resources are nonexistent or dated.😕 It would be great if the authors would tamp out a more current editionDon't buy the Kindle version-buy the book This book is actually really helpful as long as you buy the book and not the kindle edition. There are all kinds of helpful assessments and tables, that don't show up correctly on a kindle. I ended up buying the book too.

A Walk in the Woods Download

ISBN: B009GBVCAG
Title: A Walk in the Woods Pdf Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail

The Appalachian Trail trail stretches from Georgia to Maine and covers some of the most breathtaking terrain in America - majestic mountains, silent forests, sparking lakes. If you're going to take a hike, it's probably the place to go. And Bill Bryson is surely the most entertaing guide you'll find. He introduces us to the history and ecology of the trail and to some of the other hardy (or just foolhardy) folks he meets along the way - and a couple of bears. Already a classic, A Walk in the Woods will make you long for the great outdoors (or at least a comfortable chair to sit and read in).

Bryson at his best! Read or listen to every Bill Bryson book you can, especially the audiobooks for which he provides the narration. I have listened to this one no less than six times, and laugh at the dynamics between Bill and his hiking partner EVERY. SINGLE. TIME. I cannot hear the word, "Peachy" without thinking of this book. When I walked part of the A.T., we came into a little town somewhere in Maine only to find that Elvis had died like three days before; walking the Trail is genuinely is like being on some other planet at times. He educates as well as entertains. A match made in heaven!A book about someone who doesn't thru-hike the Appalachian Trail ... But nevertheless can't wait to tell you all about it and everything else they can think of instead, because they never come close to being able to achieve the premise upon which the book is supposedly based. Further, for a guy who starts the book making light of a salesman who goes way beyond the author's depth and interest level when talking hiking gear, said author nonetheless devotes the majority of the true content of this book doing exactly that, on any number of subjects, most of which have nothing to do with the AT. And as has been said in other reviews this is an individual who dearly, deeply and sincerely needs to get over himself. There is after all an entire world that exists outside the confines of New England, including the majority of the AT.A masterpiece worthy of exulting the venerable Appalachian Trail I am an avid reader. Yes, folks, I'm that annoying person who reads while standing in line, and even at red lights. I once finished an entire novel sitting in a doctor's waiting room-- but perhaps that says more about the doctor than it does about my reading abilities. haha. I also hold advanced degrees in both English and writing. I know good writing when I read it, and I have also stumbled wearily through books shoved at me from the hands of well meaning friends: "we know you love to read. Read this one and let me know what you think of it." Gah. Please don't be that person to your friends-- the frightful book foister. Please, I beg of you. Don't be that person. Don't make me flee from your presence like unfiled taxes fleeing from the IRS, to avoid said horrible book dumping.Tiresome celebrity biographies, reminiscent of a painful 9th grade essay, sold merely because a famous name is on it . . . let's admit it-- what can they really "tell all" about, when their lives are already a literal (equally wearying) open book? Romance novels, with a close up of a muscular hand clutching a lacy red bustier on the front, which after several dreary pages makes me feel like ripping it, literally, in half, and throwing the book away. Cookbooks-- there are a few decent ones in this "here read this!" genre, but many of them are thrown together to make a sale, and let's face it-- when is the last time you actually made a recipe from an actual cookbook? Exactly. You throw it in the bag for the beach, thumb through a few pages while smearing on sunscreen, and then toss it in the 'ole bookshelf when you get home, where it is destined to live for the rest of readless, purgatorial eternity.A friend recommended "A Walk in the Woods." Sigh, I thought. Another recommendation. I admire the "woods" from a distance, but I fear insects, snakes, vermin, rodents, and even the casual snap of a twig within their clutches. I do not camp. I do not eat camp food. I prefer to have my meals without a side of food poisoning. So you'd be right in thinking that my reaction was something like, "Ugh another referral. I will have less in common with this book than a Protestant would have with the Pope." I started it grudgingly, expecting to do the obligatory dragging of my eyes across the page until it was finally, relievingly, replete.Boy was I in for a surprise.Within the first few pages I surprised myself by chuckling. Then laughing. Then outright, from the gut, throwing back my head and howling. I stayed up until almost 1 AM that first night, devouring chapter after chapter, even though I had to be up early for work the next day. I just couldn't put it down. The writing is refreshingly honest-- at once thoughtful, hilarious, sarcastic, and downright well done. This is not the scribbling of a celebrity trying to sell books. This is the tale of someone who has truly lived a once in a lifetime kind of all-American experience. His observations about the conditions of the trails, the miraculous preservation efforts made by volunteers on the trail for decades, and even his views on life, are inspirational. His descriptions of the kooky characters, the beautiful, sweeping vistas of untouched wilderness that he discovered as he rounded thousands of wearying bends in the never-ending trails . . . it's magic. Pure magic. I can almost close my eyes and see it, so vivid are his descriptions of the meadows, the wildflowers, the soft sighing of the trees in the quiet breeze.I've always said that the best kind of writing contains three elements. First, it is relevant/relate-able to all. It takes an incredible author to take a subject about which I have little interest (camping), and make it relevant and interesting to me, yet he does. Second, it should have humor-- not the "polite chuckle" kind of humor, but a real, genuine, gut laughing kind of humor, hidden delightfully throughout the text, waiting to surprise you like golden treasure where you would least think to look. Third, it should have moments of piercing, beautiful clarity-- moments when you find yourself, for reasons you almost can't explain, blinking back the tears as some particularly poignant thought resonates through your very being.Bill Bryson delivers richly on all three counts. This book ended with my feeling deliciously and completely satiated, in every way. I laughed until my sides were sore, I cried at the honest, beautiful tendrils of his story as it wrapped its beautifully written arms around my heart. I shook my head solemnly with a deep, "Mmmm, yes" at the inspirations recorded within the story as he discovered, not just the beauty of the Appalachian Trail, but the beauty of life, warmth, family, and companionship. Perhaps the beauty of America is that a little bit of the magic resides in the heart of all of us. That's the message here. And it's a darned inspirational one.I haven't done this often, but a few times in my life a book is so wonderful-- so stupendous-- that I just can't bear to end it. So the moment I finish, I move my bookmark back to chapter 1. Not ending-- just starting again. My bookmark is resting in chapter 1 of this one.

Mushrooms of the Upper Midwest Download

ISBN: 1591939607
Title: Mushrooms of the Upper Midwest Pdf A Simple Guide to Common Mushrooms (Mushroom Guides)
Author: Teresa Marrone
Published Date: 2020-03-10
Page: 304

Teresa Marrone has been gathering and preparing wild edibles for three decades―and writing about them for 25 years. She is the author of more than a dozen outdoors-themed books, including the Wild Berries & Fruits Field Guide series (currently available for four regions of the U.S.) and numerous cookbooks featuring wild foods. She lives in Minneapolis with husband Bruce and enjoys shooting photos of mushrooms, berries and all things wild in the area surrounding their property abutting Minnesota’s Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness. A born forager, Kathy Yerich has been intimately involved with mushroom foraging for over 10 years. A proud member of the Minnesota Mycological Society and the North American Mycological Association, she has traveled the country in search of fungi. She has recently started seeing a new side of mushrooms with the discovery of macro lenses. A video producer by day, she is more comfortable behind the camera but recently got a taste of the other side, foraging with “Bizarre Foods” host Andrew Zimmern in a web series called “Appetite for Life.” She lives in Forest Lake, Minnesota, with her potter and mushroom-scout husband Fred and multiple four-legged friends. This collaboration with Teresa is her first book. Wine Caps Stropharia rugosoannulata HABITAT: Wine Caps grow scattered or in small groups on wood chips, mulch and straw; also found in gardens, lawns and cultivated areas. They are saprobes, getting nutrients from decaying organic matter that is often underground. DESCRIPTION: Although the cap of this mushroom may be as wide as 8 inches, it is generally smaller. Young specimens have pillowy caps with a thick white partial veil underneath; the bottom of the veil has an irregular edge, somewhat resembling a gear or cogwheel. The cap expands with age, becoming broadly convex. It is generally 2 to 5-1⁄2 inches wide and is burgundy to reddish-brown, with a dry, smooth surface; older specimens may fade to tan and can develop cracks, especially in dry conditions. The veil remnants form a persistent ring on the upper stem; the ring retains the cogwheel-shaped edges and the upper side of the ring is finely ribbed. Stems are typically 4 to 6 inches tall and white or cream-colored; they are moderately stout and typically wider at the base, which often is surrounded by whitish mycelium (threadlike fungal roots) that may be visible in the growing substrate. Gills are closely spaced and attached to the stem; they are white at first, turning grayish-lilac to purplish-black. SPORE PRINT: Purplish-brown to blackish. SEASON: Spring through fall; less common during summer but still present. OTHER NAMES: Wine-Cap Stropharia, Garden Giant, King Stropharia. COMPARE: Some Russula species (pg. 138; inedible or toxic) have reddish caps; stems have no ring and the spores are creamy yellowish to pale orangish-yellow. Russulas grow near trees. * Brick Tops (pg. 140; edible) have brick-red caps; stems have a filmy ring remnant or no ring. * Some toxic Amanita species (pgs. 62–66) have reddish caps and rings on the stem, but they have white spores and a cup around the stem base; the cup may be obvious but is sometimes partially or completely buried.  NOTES: Wine Caps are delicious; make a spore print of each specimen to avoid toxic lookalikes. Wine Caps are available in grow-it-yourself kits; they are easy to grow in outdoor gardens on wood chips.
